FIRE ANT CONTROL

Fire ants do an estimated $1.2 billion in damage and expenditures annually in Texas. They are attracted to electricity, and when traffic lights are down/flashing in summer its commonly caused by fire ants. Ants are polymorphic and will come in different sizes depending on how well the colony is doing. Their colonies can be 10 feet deep, and usually contain multiple queens that can live 7 years or more. This is why you can kill 1 mound and then another pops up a few days later. Average colony sizes are between 100,000-500,000 workers, with queens and winged ants in addition. When a mound is disturbed, hundreds of ants will come flooding out. When the fire ant stings they release a pheromone to alert others to also sting, and will do so all at once. Their sting can cause a bump with white pustule to form, and in rare instances can cause anaphylaxis.
